Tagomago is a small private island about 900 metres off the northeast coast of Ibiza, opposite the bay of Pou des Lleó. It is 1,525 metres long and just 113 metres wide, and with no ferry service it can be reached only by boat. It is a well appreciated anchorage for day charterers, who come for its natural beauty, crystal clear waters, lush vegetation and impressive cliffs.
Where is Tagomago?
The island sits off the quiet northeast corner of Ibiza. From Ibiza Town the route follows the east coast past Santa Eulalia and is roughly 13 nautical miles, around 24 kilometres. Most of the motor yachts in our fleet cruise at 22 to 24 knots, which makes it around 35 minutes each way, a little longer than the run to Formentera.
Who owns Tagomago?
Tagomago is privately owned by a Spanish family. There is a single villa on the island, rented out as a private retreat, and over the years it has attracted politicians, musicians and other well known guests. Because the island is private, a visit here is about the water: you anchor off the island, swim, snorkel and have lunch on board with the cliffs as a backdrop.
A protected island
Tagomago is one of the jewels of Mediterranean biodiversity and has several levels of protection. It is included in the Natura 2000 Network, is listed as a Site of Community Interest (SCI) and as a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA), and belongs to the Natural Area of Special Interest (ANEI) of Es Amunts. Its cliffs are one of the shelters of the Eleonora's falcon. The name probably derives from Mago Barca, Carthaginian general and brother of Hannibal.
The Tagomago lighthouse
The lighthouse on the island was built in 1913. The tower is 20.4 metres high and the light stands 86.3 metres above sea level, a landmark on the shipping routes from Ibiza to Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona.
Where to anchor at Tagomago
The island counts with three anchorages: Olla de Tramontana, Olla de Llevant and Puerto de Tagomago. As everywhere in the Balearic Islands, anchoring on Posidonia oceanica seagrass is prohibited, so boats drop anchor over sand.
